NAME: Tiberius of the Deep
CANON: Original Character
CANON POINT: N/A
AGE: approximately 107 years old
HISTORY: The world of the Five Realms exists on a plane separate from that of the world we know. Comprised of five kingdoms ruled by dragon shifters, they are a world that has lived constantly on the brink of mutually assured destruction since the Great War of millenia past. Pitted against each other, holding grudges so old and so deep time has forgotten their root, the balance of power hangs on a precipice every passing day as five conflicting races of dragons and the humans that live under their rule struggle to keep the peace.
While four of the Five Realms exist on land as confined enclaves, the fifth kingdom of the Triton spans the known world. Above the surface, it consists of countless coastal cities and villages that rely on fishing for income and control the ports to the isle of Lora. These cities and villages serve as gateways to the kingdom below the waves of the Opal Sea, a realm of cities whose reach and populous are unknown to the Landborn--the humans and land dwelling dragons of the surface world.
By the standards of the Landborn, the Triton are seen as a barbaric and uncivilized people, warlike and brutal. Their fire burns even underwater, making them feared adversaries--and yet a tenuous peace exists with the surface because of the precious commodity they are willing to trade: scales shed by the Triton grow malleable and frayed when dried, allowing them to be spun into a fiber that, when woven into fabric, produces the most powerful and lightweight armor known to exist.
In truth, while the Triton are a more primitive culture, patriarchal and militaristic, they are also highly civilized with a rich spirituality guiding their daily lives, producing some of the finest philosophers and scribes the Five Realms have ever known. Their soldiers fight as the way of nature decrees: viciously and without remorse, but only when survival necessitates.
Like their Landborn cousins, they prize children above all else, but unlike surface dwellers they more readily embrace the animal nature of their inner dragon. So greatly do they indulge their primal selves that they often surface from the waters only when the mating drive has taken them in adulthood--compelled to leave the water and travel inland, they live as nomads until they find a partner and take them back to shore, not always of their own volition. Despite these well known abductions borne of biological drive, marriages are always made by choice, and the unwilling eventually released...though it is rare when a Triton driven to mate makes a poor selection. However, for this and many other reasons, including a blood feud long forgotten by history, there remains a disdain between denizens of land and sea, and an outright hatred simmering between the Triton and the dragons of Nocturne.
Tiberius of the Deep, son of Ronen of the Opal Sea and Amara Creagan, a noble among the nature dragons, is the youngest of two children. Raised in the royal city below the surface known as the Ocean of Light, he grew into a skilled warrior and an intelligent man--but as the youngest, he was forbidden to serve in the military, and did not hold enough power to serve as a general like his elder brother, Orin.
Left with little else in the way of a trade as a member of the royal family, save as a clergyman, Tiberius took to the surface decades before the mating drive could send him inland, choosing a life above the surface for himself. Seeking refuge in the royal estate that serves as a rendezvous point with the Landborn who cannot attend affairs of state below the water, Tiberius makes his living as a simple weaver, trading armor woven from his own scales with the other realms to make his way.
Living among the Landborn, Tiberius quickly learned to shed his hatred of them. Developing a fondness and respect for humans, he soon began to spend increasing amounts of time on the isle of Lora, his mother's native land. There, he broadened his understanding of the world above, and began discovering the roots of the adversarial relationship his people had with the surface. While much has been lost to time, and to his father's steadfast silence on his own ancient lifespan, it is Tiberius's belief that with study, and a few subversive alliances, there may be a day when the peace between land and sea can go from wary truce to a lasting friendship that could unite the Five Realms as one.
PAST GAME MEMORIES: N/A
PERSONALITY: Tiberius is a child of two worlds, very often feeling divided because of his heritage and the political tensions of his kingdom. As one of the Triton, he was raised to believe that instinct and the primal drive are gifts of the gods that must be respected and trusted above all else—and it is a belief he trusts and maintains with perfect faith. However, Tiberius is a sensitive and deeply emotional man: for him, to be led by instinct is not merely to be led by his body's urges or his bloodlust, but by his feelings and impressions of the world around him. He is of mixed heritage, a sea dragon with a mother who was a nature dragon, and as such he has a profound connection to the land and its people. The Triton, however, spurn the Landborn—instinct tells him that there are honorable and decent individuals among the Landborn, while everything else he knows tells him that they are wicked.
Son of nobility that he is, however, Tiberius is cunning and clever: though not manipulative, he has learned how to best use the truth to his advantage. He is skilled at holding his tongue when silence protects him, speaking when there's an advantage, and wording things just so when there's a need to obfuscate the facts. Though his lineage will not allow for him to serve, being raised in a military culture he is a keen strategist, a skill he puts to use often when dealing with the Landborn in a manner that would make his father furious.
Through it all, Tiberius is ultimately a weary soul: weary of deception, tired of being torn, exhausted by his struggles to understand why he must live a life torn in two. Sharing a closeness with the Loran kingdom has enriched his life by giving him a greater understanding of his heritage and of the surface world, yet he cannot let himself believe that the ingrained hatred of the Landborn is blind or without merit. For that reason, he can be withdrawn and quiet, but easy to coax from his shell because of the simple fact that he feels so totally alone in his deep personal conflict. Tiberius craves connection because, despite how deeply he's tied to both sides of his mixed heritage, he doesn't understand enough of the human condition to truly see the middle road as an option: embracing his own core beliefs, standing firm, and demanding respect for those beliefs from his own people.
POWERS/ABILITIES: DRAGON SHIFTER: Tiberius is a dragon shapeshifter. This means he's capable of changing at will from human form to that of an aquatic dragon. His wings are webbed for better propulsion through the water—more akin to fins, and are not capable of flight. Gills are located behind his horned head ridge. In this form, he is capable of breathing fire underwater, but his breath does require a liquid source to truly manifest—above the surface, his breath is primarily comprised of flying sparks—dangerous for its lack of control rather than its intensity in an aquatic setting. His scales act as armor underwater and are nigh on impenetrable, but when dry will soften and slough, leaving him vulnerable to injury. (NERFED: Tiberius will be unable to change form, save for his eyes and a sharpening of his teeth. In addition, to prevent anything game breaking or game damaging, should he regain his shifting he will be significantly smaller otherwise property damage. :D)
PARTIALLY AMPHIBIOUS: Like many other dragons, even in human form Tiberius is encumbered by his inner dragon—he can breathe underwater while human, but struggles to take in an adequate amount of oxygen on dry land. This means that, for his own survival, he requires full immersion in water for a few hours at least every couple of days to oxygenate himself to survive. While sea dragons are native to the ocean, they can take sanctuary in fresh or salt water to replenish themselves, and for the purposes of the game, the baths will be sufficient to sustain him (assuming they're mystically refreshed on the regular, and compelling him to spend more time around naked people. :P) unless other water sources beyond the Lake come into existence.
SPELLCASTING: Like most dragons, Tiberius has some rudimentary spellcasting abilities, but his powers are primarily limited to the use of water or other aquatic life, and often result in some manifestation of water. (NERFED: Tiberius will not have these powers.)
ENHANCED PHYSICALITY: Tiberius can heal more quickly than humans. He is also physically stronger, faster, and has keener senses—his abilities above water, however, are substandard to those of other dragons. (NERFED: Tiberius will be slightly stronger than average—figure the strength of about two men—but will otherwise be bog standard human in function.)
LIMITED WEATHER MANIPULATION: Because of his affinity with water and the magic that lives in his blood, Tiberius can manipulate the humidity of his environment. This can, under the right conditions, sometimes allow him to create weather phenomena like light rain and fog. (NERFED: Tiberius will not have these powers.)

"You're a fool."
Even as the words left his mouth, echoing in the cavernous space of the throne room, Tiberius regretted speaking them in the presence of the man on the throne. A broad, powerful figure with careworn features and close cropped hair of gold, the bronzed glow of his tanned skin alone indicated that Ronen of the Opal Sea shared any blood with Tiberius of the Deep.
"I beg your pardon?" Ronen replied, far too quietly, far too calmly. His composure was a shard of ice, clear and smooth and absolutely dangerous when applied correctly.
Tiberius bowed his head, staring at the floor from his place on bended knee before the throne. Beyond the walls of the palace, encapsulating a dry, oxygenated refuge from the water for the few Landborn that ever made it to the royal city, the water called to him. It promised peace, clarity...an easy path to the lush jungles and towering trees of Lora that would shelter him from this crisis of conscience.
"I asked you a question, son."
Gritting his teeth, Tiberius lifted his head...then stood up, looking his father directly in the eye.
"I said you're a fool." he spat quietly. "You see my visits to the land realms as a crime you must protect me from? I say you are an old fool buried in a past that you refuse to share! You hate the Landborn, yet you married one."
"You well know the mating bond is beyond even my control." Ronen snapped, rising suddenly from his throne. "Keep a respectful tongue in your head, boy..."
"Is it so wrong that I want to know where I came from, Father? By the Tide, my mother was of the land, why should it be a crime for me to visit her home? Answer me, and I will never return."
Advancing on his father, Tiberius narrowed his eyes.
"Tell me why you so hate her people, and I swear to you, by Deep and by Tide, by our Mother Moon, I will forget the dry earth until the Sky Maker and Sun Goddess join us below the waves." he pledged.
Ronen's dark eyes bore into his. Tiberius swore he could feel the heat of it--a thing he'd never felt from his own father, not as a child in even Ronen's most irate. Never, not in all his years, had he ever experienced the full weight of the wrath that, by legend, could call tsunamis to drown the sand.
"What I know of the Landborn and their treachery, my precious Star Glass, you could not begin to fathom." he replied quietly, surprising Tiberius with the use of his childhood nickname. "I have done unthinkable things as your king and your father to see to that."
Tiberius's eyes stung, but he held himself proud despite the hot shame that clawed inside his chest for release. He felt the weight of his father's honesty, heavy as the pressure of the water--and yet all he was screamed at him that he was wrong.
"Then make me understand." he pleaded one last time. "Tell me why I must forsake my heritage--tell me what wrong my own people have done to deserve such scorn?"
Something in his plea had been the wrong thing to say, because Ronen's features immediately slammed shut. The weariness of the father was gone, the burden of the ruler passed, and he was once again Ronen of the Opal Sea, king of the Triton.
"The Triton are your people." Ronen reminded him coldly. "And if you visit Lora again, I will not protect you--your freedom will be forefeit."
As Ronen took his leave of the throne room, abandoning Tiberius to stand, ashamed, confused, and impotently angry, all he could do was mourn.
Because he was not entirely sure that he could continue to call the Triton his people if his father would not speak honestly with him.
